Earth is hell, but space isn’t heaven

Classic NASA art showcases a vision of the future that isn’t exactly inviting.

I love the idea of leaving this crusty, polluted earth behind and going up to live in space as much as the next person, but life in space doesn’t exactly look like a cakewalk. These images, from a study on space colonies commissioned by NASA in the 1970’s, look kind of cool, but mainly they make it seem like living in space would be very complicated. Like, either everybody has to be floating around all the time, or you’re going to have to be inside some rotating gravity-tube that seems like it could break at any second. Still, it’s fun that NASA used to think about how to help us establish colonies in space; now they’re more concerned with whether or not they need to sell ads on the International Space Station.
