Side Note

New ‘Jersey Shore’? Sure, why not.

Jersey Shore, the pop culture phenomenon none of us asked for, is coming back to MTV. Honestly, I’m probably going to watch it. Enjoyable and supremely unchallenging television like Queer Eye and Great British Baking Show are getting many of us through this tiresome tail end of winter. And while Jersey Shore has neither the quiet joy nor focus on sparkling humanity of those shows (in fact, it’s kind of the opposite), I do remember it as a show I would watch with a similarly forgiving spirit and thirst for escapism. When I saw the new trailer for Jersey Shore: Family Vacation I couldn’t help but smile and mutter absently, “Heh, it’s Deena. Cool.”

From the looks of the trailer, it’s iffy how much nostalgia will keep folks like me tuned in past the first episode. Middle-aged people partying recklessly in a beach town has never has as much television success as the same show with naive 20-somethings. But who knows? Maybe we’ve matured as a culture and we can finally embrace slightly older people making poor decisions as well as lifelong friendships. I’m more than willing to find out.
