Several months ago, I wrote about a Kickstarter project called Narita Boy – a retro-futuristic video game that seemed to unite and exaggerate all of the things I love best about the foundational aesthetic of modern games. Now fully funded and in production, the developers have just released the first live gameplay trailer for side-scroller… and it looks incredibly cool. Imagine if Tron, Streets of Rage, and Hotline Miami had a weird baby, and you begin to approach what the Barcelona-based Studio Koba is doing with this title. Hopefully Narita Boy will meet its December 2018 release window, though it’s worth noting that several high-profile Kickstarter game projects have ended disastrously with delayed releases, or no release at all. My fingers are crossed that the same fate doesn’t befall this project, because a game this beautiful deserves to be played. But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video and see for yourself.
