“Despacito” just broke Justin Bieber’s streaming record

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s reggaeton hit has been streamed 4.6 billion times.

The infectious reggaeton track “Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, is a certifiable hit. Perhaps you’ve been caught humming it to yourself in a car, or in a grocery aisle inexplicably gyrating your hips, maybe butchering the track’s lyrics if you, like Justin Bieber, don’t speak Spanish. You aren't alone.

Today, Universal Music announced that the song, which was the first Spanish-language track to top the Billboard Hot 100 since “Macarena” in 1996, has been streamed more times than any other song in history. Together, the original and the Justin Bieber-assisted remix have been streamed 4.6 billion times across all platforms.

Having skyrocketed in popularity since its release in January, the track has unseated Bieber, beating out his 2016 hit "Sorry," which sits at 4.38 billion streams.
