New data from the CDC shows that deaths from opioid overdoses rose to 33,091 in 2015, up more than 15 percent from 2014.
Those numbers include heroin-related overdoses, which climbed to 12,990, overtaking the number of gun-related homicides in America.
Congress recently allocated $1 billion to fight the epidemic.
