Jury awards Quincy Jones back royalties from the estate of Michael Jackson

Jackson’s estate says it will appeal.

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury of 10 women and 2 men has awarded Quincy Jones $9.4 million dollars stemming from a lawsuit the legendary music producer filed four years ago in which he argued that the estate of Michael Jackson owed him more than $30 million dollars in back royalties. Jones, who produced Jackson’s iconic albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad, said in a statement, “although this is not the full amount that I was seeking, I am very grateful that the jury decided in our favor in this matter. I view it not only as a victory for myself personally, but for artists’ rights overall.”

The estate of Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, had argued unsuccessfully that Jones was owed $392,000, and plans an appeal.
