Trump thinks all negative polls are “fake news”

He’s clearly unhappy with his numbers these days.

You only need to take one peek at Donald Trump’s Twitter account to know that he isn’t too happy with his numbers appraising his presidency. Just a few hours ago, he tweeted: “Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election.” He continued: “Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.”

So, it’s really bad that our president is suggesting “any” polls that are “negative” are “fake.” At a very basic level, it’s mind-boggling for him to intimate that any information that is critical of him should be disregarded as “fake news.” And the reason he’s tweeting about it is because there’s a lot of that news going around. The polls on Trump are almost uniformly bad.

This morning’s CNN poll — which is possibly what triggered Trump’s “tweet smack” — found that a majority of Americans oppose the travel ban on refugees from certain countries (which is currently suspended and in legal limbo). The poll found that 55 percent, or 6 in 10 people, oppose the executive order Trump signed on January 27 that has led to chaos and mass protests across the nation. In the poll, 46 percent said the executive order made Americans less safe from terrorism, and 49 percent reported that it harmed “American values.” An earlier CBS News survey found that 57 percent of Americans felt the executive order went against the country’s “founding principles.”

Though a Rasmussen poll from Monday morning gave Trump a +6 job approval rating, most other recent polls suggest that Americans don’t like our president very much and don’t think he’s doing a very good job. A Gallup poll on February 5 found that 53 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump and 42 percent approved of him. A Public Policy Polling survey from last week found that more than half of Americans would like to have President Obama back in office.

Perhaps even more troubling than his job approval ratings, however, is the sense that many Americans think that the president doesn’t know how to do basic things, like go down stairs, open doors, or turn on lights. Sad!
