Tom Price, Trump’s pick for Department of Health and Human Services, is not an anti-vaxxer

He says the science suggests vaccines don’t cause autism.

During a hearing for Georgia Rep. Tom Price, Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, much of the conversation focused on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and Medicare. But Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey managed to slip in a question that is on the minds of many health care workers, doctors, scientists, parents, and advocates of reality: vaccines.

Asked point blank by Sen. Menendez, “Do vaccines cause autism,” Rep. Price responded, “I think the science in that instance is that they don’t.” He then tried to go on and say that “individuals” in the US are concerned but was cut off by Sen. Menendez who said he wanted to keep the focus on science.

Rep. Price’s views on vaccines and autism matter a lot because Trump has repeatedly spent time with dedicated anti-vaxxers like disgraced doctor Andrew Wakefield as well as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Vaccines save millions of lives each year, and no study has ever concluded or proved any link between them and autism. The only study ever claiming such a link was disproven, found to contain false data, and resulted in the above-named Dr. Wakefield losing his medical license.

Though Price’s answer today might not signal the end to worries that anti-vaxxers will be encouraged and given a voice in Trump’s administration, it is somewhat encouraging to note that there is, at least, some who are reasonable still.
