Firefighters and other first responders are the heroes of U.S. wildfire season. But where do heroes turn when they need some support themselves? In Northern California, they turn to the one and only Guy Fieri, who is taking on his second season of providing fire crews and evacuees with plates of barbecue straight from Flavortown. On Sunday, the Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives chef pitched in with non-profit Operation BBQ Relief to serve 1,400 meals in Redding, California, to crews and residents displaced by the Carr Fire, which has burned 100,000 acres since it started last week.

This is the second year Fieri has helped out with feeding wildfire victims. Last October, he spent several days providing meals in Santa Rosa, CA (where he lives) using his very own smoker. “This isn’t a PR stunt,” he told a local news station. “You don’t see my banners up. I’m not promoting anything. I’m just here cooking. This is feeding people. People need help, and I’m here to help. That’s it.”

Fieri is no stranger to spreading joy through food and his whimsical personality — and with his love of flame-decorated shirts, he is also famously unafraid of fire. It’s nice to see a star using such specific gifts for good. And considering how fire season is only getting worse each year, it unfortunately looks like this won’t be the last time Fieri is called upon to support wildfire victims in this way. Heroes, truly, are all around us, and some of them have platinum-blonde, gelled hair.
