We spend more time on our phones than ever

And almost six hours a day online.

Every year, the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers releases its Internet Trends Report, a very long document that offers a macro view of what’s been going on with the internet over the past year or so. While a lot of what’s in the report is only the sort of stuff that you’d be interested in if you were an entrepreneur or investor, it contains a couple bits of information worth considering.

As you can see in the above graph, as the years go by we spend more and more time consuming media online — nearly six hours per day, to be exact. Which, like, holy shit. On top of that, but the majority of those hours — 3.3 per day — is spent on our phones, an all-time high.

KPCBs report indicates that 49% of the world is now online, which means on average, almost half of the world is spending like a fifth of their waking hours staring at some crap on their smartphone. If nothing else, that’s got to be bad for humanity’s collective posture.

There’s a silver lining to all of this, though — KPCB also projects that once a full 50% of the world gets the internet, the internet’s user base will begin to slow. Soon, we will reach Peak Internet, and at that point, maybe we’ll more carefully consider the ways we spend our time online.
