World Dispatch: Why “hi” is the worst thing you can message someone

If you say that and nothing else, I’m probably getting fired.

Every Monday through Thursday, The Outline World Dispatch brings you stories about Power, Culture, and the Future. We guarantee you’ll feel smarter and more hydrated.

More and more people are working remotely, so folks are turning to Slack and other tools to keep in touch with their co-workers. But that means we don’t get all the context and cues that could lead to awkward situations.

That leads us to a situation that our future editor, Casey Johnston, found herself in. Erika Allen, The Outline's managing editor, messaged her “hi!” and it led to surely believing that nothing good was in store. So we, at the Dispatch, decided we should surprise Erika with an intervention and figure out what’s up with the ‘hi’’s?

Give it a listen, and let us know what you think on Twitter. We’re @OutlineDispatch. We won’t leave you hanging.

Like what you hear? We like you, too. So let’s make it official. Subscribe to us at any of the places below.
