World Dispatch: How the alt-right targets depressed people

Seemingly generic YouTube videos about overcoming depression are gateways into a world of vitriolic extremism. We take a look at some, today on The Outline World Dispatch.

Every Monday through Thursday, The Outline World Dispatch brings you stories about Power, Culture, and the Future. We guarantee you’ll feel smarter and more hydrated. Hosted by yours truly.

Imagine that you’re watching a video about overcoming depression. In it, a speaker in a classroom of some sort starts talking to you about your self worth. He sounds convincing — authoritative almost. But as you descend into a spiral of his videos and related ones, the philosophies get more and more suspect — sexist, racist, rooted in male dominance.

Today on the show, Outline staff writer Paris Martineau walks me through the world of these videos that target depressed, dejected men, and encourage them to find comfort in backwards ideologies.
