World Dispatch: Depression ads on Instagram

On this episode of The Outline World Dispatch: What happens when Instagram ads try to address your mental health?

Every Monday through Thursday, The Outline World Dispatch brings you stories about Power, Culture, and the Future. We guarantee you’ll feel smarter and more hydrated. Hosted by yours truly.

If you use Instagram or Facebook, you’ve probably noticed oddly specific ads on your feed, loosely (or creepily) tailored to your interests. That’s in part due to browsing information that social platforms gather about you.

But Outline staff writer Paris Martineau had a unique experience. For several months, she’s seen ads all about depression and others framed around mental health. In this episode of the Dispatch, Martineau explores why the ads are in her feed, and walks through some steps to learn more about what social platforms think they know about you.

Instagram ads are one thing, but if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, or just needs someone to talk to, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
